Credit counseling grant awarded to William Jewell SIFE team Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 February 4, 2008
The William Jewell College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team recently received a grant from American International Group, Inc. (AIG) to help fund work teaching their peers about the responsible use of credit. Jewell’s SIFE team is one of 120 in the United States to participate in the AIG Credit Counseling Challenge.
SIFE member Abbey Cole, a resident of Higginsville, Mo., attended a special training seminar recently in New York City. The AIG grant provides annual funding of $750 for three years, plus travel expenses for student training. At the end of the seminar, participating SIFE students were challenged and empowered to bring their learning back to their communities, to share with the other members of their teams, and to develop an innovative and creative program to teach college freshmen and seniors about the core topic.
“This is an amazing opportunity to create change and add value to our campus community in the area of financial literacy education,” said Cole, a sophomore accounting major.
Hattie Rains, a sophomore accounting major and resident of Gallatin, Mo., is serving as co-project leader. “It’s wonderful to have a team assembled so early in the project planning phase,” said Linda Bell, professor of accounting in William Jewell’s Department of Business & Leadership. “This really reflects the team members’ excitement about the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of other students.”
Each team that successfully completes the three-year program will be invited to send one student to a special SIFE Credit Counseling Day in the fall of 2010. At this event, students will be recognized for their achievements in credit counseling education.
William Jewell’s SIFE team is in its fourth year of activity. The team is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity to impact communities by teaching the principles of free enterprise while achieving a higher level of excellence.
