Environmental disasters, financial discipline and human trafficking are among the topics to be explored during William Jewell College’s Cardinal Term seminars. The free events, which are open to the public, will include lectures, film screenings and other activities on the Liberty, Mo., campus January 9 through 15.

“The winter break provides an opportunity for us to extend our reach beyond the traditional academic offerings,” said Dr. David Sallee, president of William Jewell College. “Members of the larger community can visit the campus to learn about intriguing subjects in a relaxed atmosphere.” Courses will be taught by William Jewell alumni, faculty and friends of the College. No credit will be given.

The Cardinal Term revives the tradition of William Jewell’s informal “Winterim,” a series of courses that were taught between semesters prior to 1995. “In talking with alumni, I often heard about the great memories they have of the winter term courses,” Dr. Sallee said. “I thought this would be a good opportunity for alumni and community members to return to reconnect with the campus and get to know our current students.”

The informal courses will feature a wide variety of topics. Seminar length and format will vary by topic and instructor; both day and evening sessions are scheduled.

Among the scheduled Cardinal Term courses are “Can You Trust Environmental Officials,” “Human Trafficking,” “Health Care Policy,” “Financial Discipline,” and a seminar conducted by President David Sallee built around the book Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard, by Chip Heath and Dan Heath. Also scheduled is a Jazz Vespers program in which a jazz ensemble will play traditional hymn tunes in several styles, with the tunes to be interpreted by a modern dancer, along with a number of film screenings.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged for the seminars to allow for adequate classroom space. Enrollment will close as space fills. The deadline for pre-registration is January 7.
