Henry Bloch, founder of the H&R Block tax preparation company, and his son Tom Bloch, former CEO of H&R Block and author of the new book Many Happy Returns: The Story of Henry Bloch, America’s Tax Man, will jointly offer the Distinguished Executive Lecture in Business and Leadership at 7:30 p.m. April 19 in Yates-Gill College Union on the William Jewell College campus in Liberty, Mo. The lecture is free and the public is invited to attend; no tickets or reservations are required.

Henry and Tom Bloch will discuss the new book that describes the tax preparers’ early years, the struggles of entrepreneurship, and their perspective on philanthropy. Tom Bloch will also address his dramatic personal transition from the boardroom to the classroom. The son of H&R Block’s founder resigned his position as president and CEO of H&R Block after nearly two decades to become a math teacher in an impoverished inner-city section of Kansas City in the mid-1990s. Stand for the Best, his highly regarded book on the experience, reveals Bloch’s struggles to make a difference for his marginalized students and his efforts to co-found a successful charter school, University Academy. The former Fortune 500 company executive is still an outspoken expert on educational challenges confronting our country, and an ardent believer in school children’s capacity to succeed.

The lecture will also focus on the ongoing debate about America’s tax structure and the Bush administration’s tax cuts for wealthy Americans. “It is more important to reduce our nation’s deficit than to give wealthy taxpayers like me a tax cut,” Henry Bloch said. “If the tax cuts for the rich become permanent, it could add a staggering $700 billion to our country’s deficit over the next 10 years. That is unjustifiable, considering there is no certainty that extending the cuts for the wealthy would result in economic growth.”

Tom Bloch currently serves as vice chairman of the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) Trustees and president of the Endowment Board of the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at UMKC. He is also a founding board member of the UMKC Foundation. He was a director of H & R Block from 1983 to 1995 and from 2000 to 2010.

William Jewell College is committed to bringing together talented students and gifted faculty mentors within a vibrant community sparked by a rigorous and intentional liberal arts curriculum. A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of more than two million.
