Jewell Theatre will host a residential camp June 17-22 for grades 9 through 12 (graduating seniors welcome) on the Liberty campus of William Jewell College. Jewell faculty, alumni and students will lead improvisation games, acting classes, workshops and production rehearsals. Campers will be cast in a production that rehearses each afternoon and is performed as part of a final show for family and friends. “As the new Director of Theatre at William Jewell College, my first big venture is to host our first Summer Camp experience for high school students,” said Nathan Wyman, Director of Theatre. “Last June we held the Jewell Theatre Symposium for talented high school students interested in theatre. That event was such a success that we’ve decided to make a week of it.”The residential camp allows students the opportunity to live on campus and eat in the dining hall, providing a sneak peak at college life.
“I’ve brought together a qualified staff of recent working graduates of our theatre program and have planned a fun and educational week of workshops and activities to help these students learn more about what it means to be a theatre artist,” Wyman said. “They will spend their days learning and playing with other talented students and have opportunities to strengthen their skills in both performance and technical areas.”
Each evening throughout the week students will have opportunities to strengthen their bond with each other. The Monday night event with Jewell’s Tucker Leadership Lab will help the students learn how to work together as a cast through innovative “low ropes course” activities. Tuesday night will be an improvisation night hosted by some of Kansas City’s best improv talent, allowing students a chance to learn through participation. Students get to share their own abilities at Talent Night on Wednesday. Thursday night’s activity is a camp dance with a professional DJ on the stage at Peters Theater. The week wraps up Friday night with a performance for family and friends.
