William Jewell Debate placed 5th overall in the 2010 National Parliamentary Debate Association Championships, held March 19-22 at Texas Tech University. Four of five competing Jewell teams qualified for the awards bracket by posting a 5-3 or better preliminary round record. The teams won their first debate in the awards bracket before losing in the second round, finishing in the top 64 teams out of 190 competing teams from 59 colleges and universities. The overall sweepstakes award was won by Washburn University, followed by Whitman College, Western Washington University, Texas Tech University and William Jewell.

Jewell’s top debaters of the tournament were sophomores David Dingess (Aurora, CO) and Andrew Potter (Buhler, KS). Dingess and Potter were 6-2 in preliminary rounds. Also finishing in the top 64 teams were Nichole Latimer (sophomore, Yankton, SD) and Kyle Mellon (first year, Norman, OK); Heather Swadley (first year, Shawnee, OK) and Abby Thomas (sophomore, Columbia, MO); and first years Matt Reisener (Indianola, IA) and Tyler White (Kansas City, MO). Michael LaCombe (sophomore, South Sioux City, NE) and Jimmy Stuart (first year, Sioux City, IA) were 4-4 in preliminary rounds.

In addition to their tournament awards, Jewell received 6th place in the season-long sweepstakes out of over 250 colleges and universities who competed in parliamentary debate in 2009-10. Parliamentary debate demands that debaters research and speak intelligently on a wide range of current events. The topic changes every round, with each topic announced 20 minutes in advance of the round. At the national tournament, topics varied from the Greek sovereign debt crisis, to health care reform, to eliminating tax-exempt status for religious organizations.

“This was an incredible national tournament,” said Director of Debate Dr. Gina Lane. “Our young squad, all in their first or second year of collegiate debate, showed a great deal of maturity and competitiveness under pressure. Our debaters truly stepped up to the challenge of the national tournament.”

William Jewell Debate finishes its season March 26-30 at the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence, hosted by Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles. The four teams that qualified for the awards bracket at the NPDA Championships were ranked in the top 64 teams in the nation throughout the year, giving them each a bid to this invitation-only tournament.
