According to the latest Parliamentary Debate rankings, the William Jewell College debaters rank in the top 10% of all parliamentary debaters nationwide.

Dr. Gina Lane, Director of Debate, noted that there are two ranking systems: one for squads and one for individual teams. In the National Parliamentary Debate Association squad rankings, William Jewell is ranked 14th out of 212 colleges and universities nationwide. William Jewell is the top Missouri program in the rankings, edging out 19th-place Southwest Baptist University. Other notable liberal arts colleges in the top 20 are Willamette University, Salem, Ore. (#10); Whitman College, Walla Walla, Wash. (#12); and Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Mich. (#17).

Individual team rankings from the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence include three Jewell teams in the top 10% nationwide out of 822 competing teams. Sophomore political science major Tim Brooks (Springfield, Mo.) and senior Oxbridge Institutions and Policies and philosophy double major Jake Williams (Omaha, Neb.) are ranked 41st, followed by sophomore political science major Kyle Hendricks (Gladstone, Mo.) and senior Oxbridge Institutions and Policies and political science double major Paige Oster (Springfield, Mo.) at 64th, and first-year Oxbridge History of Ideas major David Dingess (Aurora, Colo.) and first-year political science major Andrew Potter ranked at 68th.

“All three teams have performed well this year,” Dr. Lane said. “I feel certain that Brooks and Williams will receive a bid to the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence, and the other two teams have a good chance for an at-large bid.”

Jewell debaters will compete the weekend of February 6 at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. More than 150 teams from 60 colleges and universities will be competing, making this the largest invitational debate tournament in the nation. Jewell debaters will finish their regular season competition at the Missouri State Debate Championships, hosted at Metropolitan Community College-Longview February 20-21.

William Jewell College is committed to bringing together talented students and gifted faculty mentors within a vibrant community sparked by a rigorous and intentional liberal arts curriculum. A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of more than 1.5 million.
