Dr. Alan Holiman, professor of political science at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., has been selected to participate in the Brandeis University Jacob and Libby Goodman Institute for the Study of Zionism and Summer Institute for Israel Studies to be held June 13- July 5. Participants will gather on the Brandeis University campus in Waltham, Mass., for initial study June 13-27, with the remainder of the program conducted in Israel.

The seminar is designed to assist faculty in colleges and universities primarily in North America in the design of new courses in Israel Studies that they plan to introduce into the curriculum of their home campuses. Approximately 20 candidates were selected.

“I am honored that Brandeis University has given me this wonderful opportunity for scholarly and professional growth,” Dr. Holiman said. “Not only will I be able to read extensively and to engage in seminars led by prominent U.S. experts and scholars of Israeli affairs, but I will also have the chance to spend time in Israel itself meeting with prominent academics, writers, journalists and public policy professionals.

“The goal of the institute is to help U.S. academics acquire the expertise necessary to teach about Israel at an advanced level. I am particularly excited that participants are required to design a course syllabus and submit it to peer-review and criticism at the conclusion of the program. I will return from Brandeis University and from Israel ready to teach a course on Israeli politics & society. This will not only expand the curriculum of the Department of Political Science, but will enrich the education of our Jewell students.”

Each seminar in this newly emerging field will explore a significant area with a view to developing a sense for current research on central issues and familiarity with classic scholarship. The seminars include an overview of Zionist thought but primarily focus on the social, political and economic history of the State of Israel, including settlement, immigration, nation-building, cultural studies including literature available in English translation, ethnic and religious/secular divides, Arab-Jewish relations within Israel and between Israel and states in the region, and international relations. At the conclusion of the Institute each participant will present a syllabus suitable for introduction on the home campus. Distinguished scholars present both at Brandeis University and in Israel.

Dr. Holiman serves as a professor of political science at William Jewell. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas; his M.A. from The Ohio State University; and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Dr. Holiman joined the William Jewell faculty in 1997. He is a resident of Kansas City, North.
