William Jewell College’s Unity Association, in partnership with the Harriman-Jewell Series and the college’s Diversity Committee, will present “Setting the Stage” at 7 p.m. February 12 in John Gano Memorial Chapel on the campus in Liberty, Mo. The program is free and open to the public, but a $5 donation is requested; tickets or reservations are not required.

“Setting the Stage,” which is presented by Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, provides an interactive walk through African-American dance history during Black History Month. Audience members are introduced to various dancers and choreographers in a multi-media story of African-American dance that is interwoven into the broader tapestry of history to give insight into the legacies of the artists.

William Jewell’s Unity Association facilitates communication among persons of various ethnic backgrounds. The organization participates in community projects as well as campus activities.

The Harriman-Jewell Series first presented the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to the Kansas City community 40 years ago, March 12, 1968, on William Jewell’s Gano Chapel stage. Four additional presentations of the Ailey company through the early 1970s began to solidify the community’s affinity for Ailey and his dancers. Since Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey’s founding in 1984, the Series has cooperatively presented the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1984, 1986, 2004, and will again this fall, on Thursday, November 13, 2008, at the downtown Kansas City Midland Theatre.

Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey presents the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater companies, with a special emphasis on youth development through dance performances, dance education and community programs.
