Painting exhibit to open at Jewell’s Stocksdale Gallery Contact: Rob Eisele, 816-415-7574 September 9, 2009
The Stocksdale Gallery of William Jewell College continues its exhibition season with the paintings of William Jewell alumnus Joel Sager of Columbia, Mo. The exhibit opens October 1 and runs through October 31. There will be an artist reception open to the public on Saturday, October 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The gallery is located on the top floor of Brown Hall on the campus of William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo.
A member of the William Jewell College class of 2003, Sager is an American painter and native Missourian with a body of work that has been described by critics as “moody” and “smart.” Fascinated by the rural life surrounding him, Sager presents (most often by means of landscapes, still-lifes, and portraiture) a dark perspective of such imagery, juxtaposing the seemingly mundane and lifeless with subtle allegory and vitality.
Sager’s paintings have been shown nationally and internationally from Hollywood, California to Yokohama, Japan. He exhibited in the “Missouri 50” for outstanding Missouri artists and was featured on NPR’s broadcast of Michael Feldman’s “What Do You Know?” Sager’s paintings have been seen in print at the 2006 and 2007 True/ False Film Festival, the seasonal 2005 Les Bourgeois Syrah wine label, and in the publications of Persea Books, New York. His originals can be found in private and corporate collections nationally. Sager shows new work seasonally at Perlow-Stevens Gallery in Columbia, where the artist currently resides with his wife and son.
The opening reception and exhibit are open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information contact gallery director, Rob Quinn at 816-718-4840, orquinnr AT william.jewell DOT edu.
