April 30, 2007

The world-acclaimed Philadelphia Orchestra, led by Music Director Christoph Eschenbach, performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Music Hall (13th and Central Sts.) in downtown Kansas City, Mo. The planned program includes Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante in E-flat major and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor. The Orchestra closes the Harriman-Jewell Series' 2006-2007 season, and was previously presented to Kansas City by the Series in 1986 and 1994.

The Philadelphia Orchestra has distinguished itself as one of the leading orchestras in the world through a century of acclaimed performances, international tours and unprecedented innovation in recording and outreach. This rich tradition is carried on by Christoph Eschenbach, who became the Orchestra’s seventh music director in 2003.

The 2006-07 season highlights the music of Mozart and Shostakovich. In January 2007, Christoph Eschenbach led the Orchestra in the Academy of Music 150th Anniversary Concert. During his tenure, Eschenbach has conducted Beethoven’s nine symphonies paired with music of our time; led a four-week Late Great Works Festival; launched the Orchestra’s first-ever multi-year cycle of Mahler’s complete symphonies; and led tours of Europe, Asia, and Puerto Rico.

The Orchestra began a three-year partnership with Ondine Records in 2005, and has so far released five recordings taken from live concerts. In September 2006, the Orchestra became the first major American orchestra to offer downloads of recent and archival music through its online music store. As of April 2006, the Orchestra is broadcast regularly on National Public Radio.

The Philadelphia Orchestra touches the lives of music lovers worldwide through its performances, publications, recordings, and broadcasts. The Orchestra presents a subscription season in Philadelphia each year from September to May, in addition to education and community partnership programs, and appears annually at Carnegie Hall.

Tickets to the Philadelphia Orchestra concert are $25, $40 or $55; please call the Harriman-Jewell Series at 816-415-5025 (or toll free at 888-528-5521). Tickets and event information are also available at www.harriman-jewell.org. The Richard J. Stern Foundation sponsors this downtown Kansas City concert.

Now in its 42nd season, the nationally recognized Harriman-Jewell Series brings acclaimed performers from the worlds of music, dance, and theatre to Kansas City’s downtown venues. In addition to the performances, education events offer free master classes and lectures that allow area community members and students to view artists in an informal setting. Peterson’s Smart Parents Guide to College cites the Series as a prime example of how small colleges “can become centers of culture for an entire region.”
