The 2011 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” names William Jewell in the first tier among the nation’s top 190 liberal arts colleges. William Jewell ranked at the number 131 slot among colleges that focus almost exclusively on undergraduate education and that award at least 50 percent of their degrees in the arts and sciences.

The U.S. News college rankings group schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The magazine’s annual rankings are based on such factors as peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and graduation rate performance. William Jewell is the only national liberal arts college in the Kansas City region. Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., claimed the top spot in the “Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” listing in which William Jewell is ranked.

The 2011 rankings for William Jewell College reflect an increase from 33% to 34% of freshmen ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class, as well as an increase in SAT/ACT scores. Graduation rate performance is more heavily weighted in this year’s rankings, accounting for 7.5 percent of the final score, up from 5 percent in previous listings. For the first time this year, the opinions of high school guidance counselors were also factored into the final scores. For more information, go to www.usnews.com/colleges

The U.S. News ranking is the fourth national accolade received by William Jewell College this month. William Jewell was named among “America’s Best Colleges” in an August ranking published by Forbes Magazine, and was listed among The Princeton Review’s “The Best 373 Colleges” for 2011. Only about 15% of the country’s four-year colleges and universities are considered for these top-tier rankings. The College was also listed among the top 50 liberal arts colleges in the country in terms of future earning potential of its graduates in a survey by the PayScale data collection company.

Classes begin August 25 on the William Jewell campus in Liberty, Mo.
