“After the Financial Crisis: Embracing Responsibility and Accountability” will be the topic as Peter deSilva, president and Chief Operating Officer, UMB Financial Corporation, offers a free public address as part of William Jewell College’s Everett P. Truex Economic and Financial Forum at 7:30 p.m. October 27 in Yates-Gill College Union on the William Jewell campus in Liberty, Mo. The lecture is free and open to the public; tickets or reservations are not required.
In addition to serving as President and COO for UMB Financial Corporation, Mr. deSilva also serves as Chairman and CEO of UMB Bank, n.a. Additionally, he serves as Chairman of UMB Fund Services. Mr. deSilva joined UMB in January 2004 and is responsible for developing overall strategic direction and ensuring execution of the company’s key strategies and plans. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company and has direct oversight for Personal Financial Services and Institutional Financial Services including personal and institutional asset management, brokerage, treasury management, consumer banking, mutual fund services and correspondent banking. He also is responsible for the company’s operating platforms, sales, marketing and technology development.
Mr. deSilva is an active member in the greater Kansas City community. He currently serves as chair of The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and is a board member of Students in Free Enterprise and The Civic Council. He is also a former board member of the Kansas City Symphony and The United Way of Greater Kansas City. Additionally, Mr. deSilva has served as Chairman of the 2008 Greater Kansas City United Way campaign, Park University Founders Day, the Asian Chamber of Commerce, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Light the Night walk and numerous other fundraising events.
A native of Dartmouth, Mass., Mr. deSilva earned a Bachelor of Science degree in management from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He completed coursework in business administration at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and the Bryant College School of Business in Lincoln, R.I. Prior to joining UMB, Mr. deSilva spent 16 years in the financial services industry with Fidelity Investments in Boston. He served in numerous roles including seven years as Senior Vice President for Fidelity Brokerage Company.
The endowed lecture series focuses on finance and economics. The Everett P. Truex Economic and Financial Forum brings nationally recognized economists to William Jewell College each year. Funding for the endowed forum is provided by the Everett Truex Trust. The late Dr. Truex was a Liberty High School graduate and a 1942 William Jewell alumnus who later returned to the College as an economics and statistics professor.
