April 28, 2009

The William Jewell College Pryor Legacy Class of 2009 will host “Hunger in America,” an awareness-raising event featuring keynote speaker Robert Egger, President and Founder of the DC Central Kitchen, at 7 p.m. Monday, May 4 in John Gano Memorial Chapel on the campus at 500 College Hill in Liberty, Mo.

The event will serve as a kick off for the William Jewell College Food Rescue Program, a student-led service initiative designed to redistribute unserved food from the William Jewell College Dining Hall to individuals in need within the Kansas City Area through a partnership with Harvesters. The public is invited to attend the free event, and no tickets or reservations are required.

A panel addressing hunger issues will also be held at 4 p.m. in White Science Center Room 107 on the campus. The panel features Egger along with Karen Haren, President & CEO of Harvesters and winner of the Community Food Network Executive Director of the Year award; Dan Doty, Executive Director of City Union Mission; and Andy Pratt, Executive Director of William Jewell College’s Center for Justice and Sustainability. All panelists will serve as local advocates for hunger missions in the Kansas City area. Although there is no charge to attend either event, donations are welcome.

In partnering with Harvesters, Kansas City’s largest food bank, the William Jewell College Food Rescue program will redistribute unserved food from William Jewell’s dining hall to feed those in need throughout the Liberty and Kansas City areas. Harvesters’ network serves nearly 60,000 people every week, 43 percent of whom are children. Harvesters, which was founded in 1979, is a certified member of Feeding America, a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks, serving all 50 states.

“The William Jewell College Food Rescue Program is the result of student recognition of need in the Greater Kansas City area,” says Liz Powell, a member of the project team. “Our team saw this as a way that we could help contribute to the solution.”

Recognized internationally, the Pryor Leadership Studies Program is an experience-based leadership development program. Each year graduating seniors pick a leadership legacy project to provide service to the community.
