Judges declared that William Jewell’s SIFE team is one of the top 48 teams in the nation at the EXPO competition held May 10-12 in Philadelphia, PA. The team earned an invitation to the Expo after being named a SIFE USA Regional Champion at the March 23 regional event held in Seattle, WA. This was the five-year-old team’s fourth consecutive year to advance to the national level of judging.

The team received a $1,000 cash award and a plaque at the regional event as one of 16 National finalists in the SIFE USA HSBC Financial Literacy Competition for their “Money Farm” project. The team was also recognized in the SIFE USA Market Economics Competition sponsored by Clorox, for the “Feed the Pig” project that taught college students about credit card abuse, debt management and personal investing.

A special Second Place National Award trophy and cash prize of $2,000 honored “Money Farm” in Philadelphia. This program teaches elementary students about the concepts of saving, spending, investing and donating. M&I Bank sponsors this project and provides special “Moolah” cow banks to students completing the training provided by the Jewell SIFE team.

During the 2008-09 academic year, the Jewell SIFE team organized 11 projects in the greater Kansas City community, including a new program on environmental sustainability in partnership with a local Sam’s Club. This work resulted in Jewell SIFE taking a Regional Champion title and being named a National Finalist at April competition in Bentonville, AR. Their work with two local businesses took a national third placed trophy and a $3,000 cash prize at the Expo award ceremony in Philadelphia. A video summary of this project work can be viewed at http://www.truehero.org/projects/index.cfm?id=157.

Debbie Scarfino, Sam Walton Fellow and Associate Professor of Business at William Jewell, reports: “Fifty Jewell SIFE team members devoted more than 2,500 hours to project work this past year, reaching more than 6,600 people, and generating more than 8.5 million gross impressions through media publicity. Our team shares these honors with many supportive community partners and advisory board members.”

Serving with Scarfino as Sam Walton Fellows are Mrs. Linda Bell, Professor of Accounting, Dr. Cynthia Green, Professor of Education, and Dr. Neil Nicholson, Assistant Professor of Mathematics. William Jewell SIFE is dedicated to providing students the opportunity to impact communities by teaching the principles of free enterprise while achieving a higher level of excellence.
