William Jewell College leaders have announced plans to name the College’s new Sorority Complex and Greek Common “Shumaker Hall” in recognition of the ongoing leadership and support of Jewell alumna Dianne Shumaker.

“It is a fitting tribute to an alumna who has given so much back to the College,” said Dr. David Sallee, president of William Jewell. “The opening of the sorority complex this fall will add a new dimension to the living and learning experience for Jewell students. It is entirely appropriate that Dianne’s name be linked to the quality of that experience, which will be enjoyed not only by our current students, but for generations to come.”

Shumaker, a member of the William Jewell College class of 1966 and member of Beta Sigma Omicron (now Zeta Tau Alpha), has been a consistent supporter of her alma mater. She established the Shumaker Challenge in 2004 to provide matching gifts to the Jewell Fund, the College’s annual fund of unrestricted financial support. The gift played a key role in raising the percentage of alumni giving and in increasing the total dollars raised for the Jewell Fund. Shumaker has also provided leadership gifts for the Sorority Complex and the Center for Justice and Sustainability.

Shumaker’s gifts to the Sorority Complex helped to stimulate gifts from 325 individuals and a $1 million challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation.

The residential facility, designed with a community focus, will include William Jewell’s four sorority houses with suite-style rooms and private bathrooms, a multipurpose room, fitness center, private study rooms, laundry facilities and lounges. A Greek Common building will join the four houses and provide a venue for leadership programming, alumni events, retreats and social events. A dedication of the new residence facility will take place at Jewell’s Homecoming in October of 2009.

A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of more than 1.5 million.
