William Jewell College will donate the Ted Malone collection of documents, books, reel-to-reel sound recordings and other materials related to the broadcasting career of alumnus Ted Malone to the LaBudde Special Collections and Marr Sound Archives of the Miller Nichols Library at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Malone was the professional name of F. Alden Russell, a native of Missouri and a graduate of William Chrisman High School. He was a champion debater at William Jewell and worked on the college radio station while attending William Jewell from 1926 to 1928. His radio program, “Between the Book Ends,” was broadcast daily on the National Broadcasting System.

The Ted Malone Collection consists of documents, books, reel-to-reel sound recordings and other materials that relate to Malone’s 60-year broadcasting career. There are approximately 200 audio recordings, 750 print publications and 8 boxes of manuscripts, most dealing with the broadcaster’s personal interest in American poetry of the early 1900s. Notations included with the collection indicate that it includes poetry selections from approximately 27,000 American poets. Russell passed away in 1989.

“We are pleased that UMKC has agreed to house and preserve the Malone collection,” said Stephanie DeClue, director of the Curry Library at William Jewell. “The collection is of local interest, and UMKC has the audio equipment and other resources necessary to properly archive these holdings.”

William Jewell College is committed to bringing together talented students and gifted faculty mentors within a vibrant community sparked by a rigorous and intentional liberal arts curriculum. A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of more than two million.
