William Jewell College will host the Northland’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration with a program beginning at 10 a.m. January 21 in John Gano Memorial Chapel on the college campus in Liberty, Mo. The program is free and the public is invited to attend; tickets or reservations are not required.
Dr. Gwendolyn Grant, president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Kansas City, will offer the keynote address. Grant holds a bachelor of science degree, two master’s degrees (one in guidance and counseling, the other in behavioral science), a doctorate in theology, and a second doctorate in education. She completed one year of study and research in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health Science, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey at Newark, as part of her doctoral plan of study. Grant is a private consultant, media psychologist, public speaker, certified sex counselor, and a Diplomat of the American Board of Sexology, Washington, D.C. She is also a noted consultant for Fortune 500 companies. She specializes in assertiveness training, affirmative action seminars, multicultural issues, parenting workshops, human sexuality, male-female relationships, child and elderly care, sex role stereotyping, sexual harassment, stress management, leadership and life skills development, and a theology of hope for critical times. Grant is also an advice columnist for Essence Magazine. Her monthly column, “Between Us,” is read by over 7.5 million readers. She has appeared as a guest on television programs, including “Montel Williams,” “Good Morning, America,” “Sally Jessy Raphael,” “Ricki Lake,” and “Oprah.”
In addition, campus and community leaders will be honored with the Martin Luther King, Jr. community service award. Recipients include Chris Carr, a senior international relations, history and political science major and president of William Jewell’s UNITY Student Organization; Dee Rosekrans, director of community development for the Liberty School District; Kansas City civil rights activist Edith Haney-Galvin; and Rick Byers, athletic director at St. Pius X High School in Kansas City North. The program will also include a performance by William Jewell’s Concert Choir; a performance by the Liberty a cappella vocal group Kychn Synk; and a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. performed by members of the Liberty High School Black Student Association.
Immediately following the program, a tree on the southwest corner of the college’s quadrangle will be dedicated in memory of Dr. King. A free public reception will follow in the White Atrium of the Yates-Gill College Union.
