The Center for Justice and Sustainability at William Jewell College has awarded grants to fund student projects for justice and sustainability.

Anna Dixon, a junior psychology and Applied Critical Thought and Inquiry major from St. Peters, Mo., and Christine Duncan, a junior nursing major from Defiance, Mo., received funding to work with the Women’s Alliance and Children’s Affairs (WAACHA) in the Iganga District of Uganda. Anna and Christine will spend a month this summer as volunteers at WAACHA teaching basic healthcare, including CPR and basic first aid. They will focus on the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS and malaria, preventative measures and treatment. They will work informally to establish relationships with the girls and encourage them to build community with one another.

WAACHA was founded in 1998 by Susan and Noah Isanga. Noah is the president of the Lutheran Church in Uganda. The organization provides a safe environment for young women ages 18-22. Women who are enrolled in WAACHA live at the Isanga’s home for one year free of charge and learn a variety of skills, including sewing, cooking, growing a garden and basic education.

Bikesh Dahal, Ashutosh Dahal and Aayush Regmi, first-year physics majors from Nepal, will be working with the Kiva organization to promote microfinance lending projects through the Jewell community. According to Kiva.org: “Kiva’s mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty. Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending.”

Bikesh, Ashutosh and Aayush will be spreading the word about Kiva to the Jewell community and inviting people to join the lending team by making micro-loans to entrepreneurs around the world. Monthly team meetings will be conducted along with a Jewell KIVA Facebook page.

The Center for Justice and Sustainability at William Jewell College is at the heart of the College’s mission to cultivate leadership, service and spiritual growth. The Center’s role in this mission is to raise awareness of social, economic, and ecological challenges within our world in order to invite students to spend their lives creating solutions to these complex and interconnected issues.

William Jewell College is committed to bringing together talented students and gifted faculty mentors within a vibrant community sparked by a rigorous and intentional liberal arts curriculum. A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of more than two million.
