The Center for Justice and Sustainability at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., has awarded grants to fund student projects for justice and sustainability.

Cassidy Miller, a junior nonprofit leadership major from Springfield, Mo., and Paige Vansickle, a senior elementary education and Applied Critical Thought and Inquiry major from Edmond, Okla., received a grant to host an awareness and fund-raising event for women’s organizations in the greater Kansas City area. Planned for fall 2011, the event is related to the Center for Justice and Sustainability’s 2011 Summit, “Women Hold Up Half the Sky.” Selected nonprofit women’s organizations will be invited to present their missions, work and needs, giving guests an opportunity to learn about the groups, sign-up to volunteer and address specific needs of the organizations. The benefit event also will provide an opportunity to connect with community members active on behalf of social issues.

The 2011 Pryor Legacy Class also was awarded a grant to support its legacy project. The group plans to develop a local chapter of Raising a Reader, a national program that facilitates early literacy and parent engagement to improve the reading readiness skills of children in the early stages of development. Raising a Reader provides children and families with high-quality, age-appropriate multicultural books as well as instructional DVDs for parents to read to and with their children. The program encourages children to check out books from a local library. The grant will be used in Phase One of the project, enabling the Pryor Legacy Class to sponsor an informational event for 100 to 200 parents and community members to learn about the Raising a Reader program. The grant also will provide training for a project coordinator.

The Center for Justice and Sustainability at William Jewell College is at the heart of the College’s mission to cultivate leadership, service and spiritual growth. The Center’s role in this mission is to raise awareness of social, economic, and ecological challenges within our world in order to invite students to spend their lives creating solutions to these complex and interconnected issues.

William Jewell College is committed to bringing together talented students and gifted faculty mentors within a vibrant community sparked by a rigorous and intentional liberal arts curriculum. A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of more than two million.
