The Panaegis chapter of Mortar Board at William Jewell College was presented with the Golden Torch Award and Project Excellence Award for the 2006-2007 academic year at the organization’s recent national conference.

The William Jewell College chapter was one of only 28 chapters to take home the Golden Torch Award, selected for “going above and beyond timeliness and excellence while exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service,” according to national Mortar Board spokesperson Jin Schrattenecker. Rebekah Bouas, a senior religion and English literature major at William Jewell serving as the college’s 2007-2008 Mortar Board membership coordinator, was present to accept the award on behalf of the group.

The chapter also received a Project Excellence Award for their ChessMates project. Elementary students were mentored and coached in the game of chess in order to improve reasoning skills. The Panaegis chapter was one of only 24 to receive the Project Excellence Award.

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 223 chartered collegiate and 25 active alumni chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation. The Panaegis chapter at William Jewell College was founded in 1978.

Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. Some notable Mortar Board members include former President Jimmy Carter, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Lance Armstrong and former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

With its challenging academic culture and focus on student achievement, William Jewell College promises students an outstanding liberal arts education that cultivates leadership, service, and spiritual growth within a community inspired by Christian ideals and committed to open, rigorous intellectual pursuits.
