The Panaegis chapter at William Jewell College was among the outstanding chapters to be honored for their excellence at the recent 2009 Mortar Board National Conference held in Chicago. The group was one of just 32 chapters to take home the Golden Torch Award, presented to outstanding chapters that are “superb, timely and go above and beyond the minimum standards throughout the academic year,” according to the organization’s web site. Only a select number of Golden Torch Award nominees are chosen to receive the award based on their adherence to Mortar Board’s three key ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.

Additionally, the chapter was among 28 groups to receive a Project Excellence Award, recognizing members’ participation in a service day at Harvesters Community Food Network in Kansas City, Mo. Chapter President Kate Rettig was present to accept the chapter’s awards.

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from the four founding chapters to 227 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation. The Panaegis chapter at William Jewell College was chartered in 1978 and currently has 23 members.

William Jewell College is committed to bringing together talented students and gifted faculty mentors within a vibrant community sparked by a rigorous and intentional liberal arts curriculum. A full range of personal and professional development experiences are presented by the selective national liberal arts college’s location within the Kansas City metroplex of more than 1.5 million.
