Jewell Athletics to Sponsor Powerlifting and CrossFit™ Program Beginning in 2020


The William Jewell College Athletic Department is pleased to announced the addition of its Powerlifting and Cardinal CrossFit™ Program beginning in 2020. The sport, which will be fielded for both men and women, will become the 21st and 22nd varsity teams on campus and will include a combination of powerlifting, Olympic Lifting and CrossFit™ competition. 
“I am thrilled about the addition of powerlifting and CrossFit™ to our campus. We believe this program will create new opportunities for students to make competing in intercollegiate athletics a part of their undergraduate experience,” said Director of Athletics Tom Eisenhauer. “In addition, we’ve seen tremendous growth in these sports at our local high schools and believe they align well with our community and our rich tradition in athletics.”
Jewell will be one of only three institutions in the Kansas City region to offer powerlifting, joining Missouri Valley and Ottawa University. Fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference members Lindenwood and McKendree also field similar programs. The Cardinals will also become the only Midwest college to offer CrossFit™. The College is actively seeking affiliation with CrossFit™, which will allow student-athletes to compete in local and national competitions. 
Powerlifting consists of three exercises: squat, bench press and deadlift. The best lift in each category is then added to the competitor’s total, and the highest total in each weight class is declared the winner. In the event of a tie, the competitor with the lowest body weight earns the win. The Cardinals will compete in the United States Powerlifting Association.  
Olympic Lifting will focus on the events performed at the Olympic Games and include snatch and clean and jerk. Each competitor is given three attempts in each discipline, choosing whether to increase the weight on each. The highest weight completed in each event is used to determine the total for each competitor and thus the winner of each weight class. 
CrossFit™ consists of varied movements performed at high intensity, including body weight exercises as well as movements with other equipment, such as dumbbells, jump ropes and pull-up bars.
