William Jewell College celebrates both the academic achievements and individuality of its graduates. The following guidelines are designed to support a meaningful, respectful and joyful commencement experience for all.

I. Official Regalia: Cords, Medallions and Pins
The wearing and acknowledgement of cords, medallions or pins with graduation regalia is normally reserved for:

  • Students receiving academic honors, and
  • Students who belong to honor societies with academically competitive selection processes

Students may also wear cords, medallions or pins representing other organizations or groups with approval from the Vice President of Academic Affairs. These organizations will not be recognized in the official commencement program.

The Vice President of Academic Affairs, in consultation with Division Heads or Program Directors, approves all cords and medallions worn at commencement.

Process and Deadline:

  • Deadline: March 1 (annually)
  • Proposals must include:
    • Name of the organization
    • Statement of purpose
    • Description of the cord, medallion or pin
    • Name of the faculty sponsor
    • Designated point of contact (faculty or student leader)

II. Graduation Cap Decoration Guidelines
To celebrate the individuality and accomplishments of graduates, decorated graduation caps are permitted, provided they meet the following guidelines.

Permitted:

  • Decorations that are flat on the top of the cap (no items extending significantly above or beyond the cap’s edges)
  • Messages or designs reflecting personal achievements, gratitude, humor or future plans
  • Use of paint, markers, fabric or securely attached lightweight materials

Not Permitted:

  • Decorations that are three-dimensional, tall or obstructive (e.g., large objects, lights, moving parts)
  • Content that is offensive, inappropriate or disruptive, including profanity or discriminatory language or symbols
  • Advertisements or political messaging unrelated to the celebratory nature of the event
  • Any items that pose a safety risk or may damage regalia

Additional Expectations:

  • Decorations must be securely attached and not at risk of falling off during the ceremony
  • The College reserves the right to require removal or modification of decorations that do not meet these guidelines
  • Students who do not comply may be asked to replace their cap or remove decorations prior to participating in the ceremony

III. Shared Expectations
Commencement is a meaningful milestone for graduates, families and the campus community. Students are encouraged to express themselves in ways that honor their achievements while also maintaining the dignity, safety and spirit of this important occasion.
