Ancient Mediterranean Studies
The Ancient Mediterranean Studies minor offers students the chance to read texts from the ancient world in their original languages and study how the amazing diversity of Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian traditions has shaped crucial aspects modern life, like our languages, governments, artistic and literary traditions, architecture, and religious beliefs.
What will I do?
The ancient Mediterranean world was incredibly diverse; so are those who study it. Anybody who likes history, language, or wants to analyze or connect with ancient Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian traditions would excel within the Ancient Mediterranean Studies minor.
In addition to providing access to great works of literature, history, philosophy, and theology, the study of Latin provides students of all backgrounds and preparations with rigorous training in critical thinking and fundamental language skills. Besides learning Latin itself, you will gain a much deeper understanding of English vocabulary, grammar and syntax. You will become a better reader, writer and thinker. This increased power over your day-to-day language is a skill that will be valuable in any field.
In addition to ancient Mediterranean languages, the Department of Languages teaches Spanish as a major or minor, as well as French and Arabic at the elementary and intermediate levels. These courses satisfy the world language requirement for the B.A. degree, and they allow you to explore our world's languages and cultures from diverse perspectives.
What do Ancient Mediterranean cultures like Greece, Rome, and ancient Israel have to do with the modern world?
So much! Greece, Rome, and Judeo-Christian traditions continue to shape fundamental aspects of our day-to-day lives. English is full of Greek and Latin. The buildings on our campus have been designed with ancient models in mind. The liberal arts focus of our College takes inspiration from ancient Greco-Roman educational values. Judeo-Christian traditions shape modern worship and contemporary ethical debates. Our government was founded on principles first tested in ancient Greece and Rome. The study of Mediterranean Antiquity provides access to the amazing similarities—and stunning differences—between ancient and modern traditions.
Immerse yourself
While much of your language work takes place in the classroom, study abroad is an integral part of the languages program. Spend a summer or semester in the Mediterranean where you will earn credits toward your Jewell degree while immersing yourself in the day-to-day life of another language and an altogether different cultural environment. Students who study abroad invariably describe the experience as among the most impactful of their college years.
