Pre-Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary schools are looking for students with a strong background in the sciences as well as critical thinkers who have mastered a challenging core curriculum with experiential learning.

Prepare for the Next Level

If you are interested in veterinary science, you will be working with our Premedical Advisory Program. This faculty committee will guide you through your undergraduate experience and assist with mock interviews and med school applications. In addition to veterinary medicine (D.V.M.), our premed program and biomedical science minor is tailored for students interested in medicine (MD), osteopathic medicine (DO), dentistry (DDS), optometry (OD), physician assistant (PA) and anesthesia assistant (AA). You'll learn the critical thinking skills and technical abilities you'll need to succeed.

Use Your Summers Wisely

  • Several Jewell students have participated in Baylor’s SMART (Summer Medical and Research Training) Program.
  • The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) offers many suggestions, such as undergraduate research programs, internships, shadowing and the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program.
  • MD/PhD programs from the AAMC
  • Many people pursue medical careers after completing a bachelor’s degree. Sometimes additional science courses and labs will be desired or required before they are prepared to apply to medical school, so a number of schools offer post-baccalaureate premedical programs. The AAMC maintains a searchable database on each program.

Beyond Jewell

Our students value the undergraduate research emphasis at Jewell. Unlike many schools, Jewell involves you in research your first year of college. You will work with peers and collaborate with professors, and learn to question, challenge and think critically. A number of students publish research articles in national journals, present papers and posters at national conferences, earn research grants at labs across the globe and compete intercollegiately on research presentations.

Jewell graduates have been accepted into medical programs throughout the country.
