The Career Mentor Program, a cooperative with the Career Development Office and the Alumni Board of Governors, is offered for two months each semester (September-November and February-April). This program is a great way to gain valuable insight to business and industry.

Not all of life’s most important lessons are learned within the confines of a classroom, and we know that. We’re dedicated to developing true critical thinkers, and that includes the expansion of learning opportunities and meaningful life experiences.

An in-depth program for seniors, Life After Jewell, offers insights into personal, financial and professional success for life after graduation. Attend a workshop on using LinkedIn or session about preparing for graduate school. We even host a dining etiquette lunch and learn session.
Service learning is curriculum based, providing ways for you to be actively involved in service that is integral to your learning. The goal of service learning is to enhance knowledge gain, engage critical thinking and reflection and promote concern for the common good. The focus of the service component is individuals and communities that represent the diversity inherent in the world.
Service learning is not only service to the community, but includes a learning component so that specific coursework is incorporated into the service and supplemented with ongoing reflection. The purpose of service learning is to give you the opportunity to apply your skills and coursework while providing a meaningful service to the local community and meeting course objectives.
Service learning is different from…
- Volunteerism, where the primary emphasis is on the service being provided and the primary intended beneficiary is clearly the service recipient.
- Community Service, where the primary focus is on the service being provided as well as the benefits the service activities have on the recipients. The students receive some benefits by learning more about how their service makes a difference.
- Internships that engage students in service activities primarily for the purpose of providing students with hands-on experiences that enhance their learning or understanding of issues relevant to a particular area of study.
- Field Education, which provides students with co-curricular service opportunities that are related, but not fully integrated, with their formal academic studies. Students perform the service as a part of a program that is designed primarily to enhance students’ understanding of a field of study, while also providing substantial emphasis on the service being provided.

Duke Colloquium
The David Nelson Duke Colloquium is a long-time campus tradition, giving you the opportunity to present scholarly and creative works to faculty, staff and the community.
Celebrating the Life of the Mind
The Colloquium concept increases involvement of students in research, which William Jewell College believes to be a hallmark of an excellent liberal arts college. Colloquium Day is held each April on campus and is named for Dr. David Nelson Duke (1950-2000), who joined William Jewell’s religion faculty in 1980. During his 20-year career at Jewell, Dr. Duke proved himself as theologian, scholar, teacher and social advocate. His articles and books, community activism, collegiality and overall passion for life made naming the Colloquium in his memory a natural choice.
