Prepare for Student Life

We know that figuring out what to bring and how to prepare for student living can be stressful. That’s why we’ve put together a guide for what to expect from your dorm room and what you should bring.

What’s Included in Your Dorm Room

You can come to Jewell knowing all rooms have a bed (with a twin XL mattress), 4–6 drawer dresser, desk, chair, wardrobe or closet space and internet access for each resident. Students supply their own bed linens, including pillows.

In each residence hall, you will find lounge areas with a large TV, a kitchen and/or microwave/refrigerator access, laundry facilities, sports equipment and vending machines for those late-night study sessions. We have staff living in every building. You will find our staff friendly, helpful and willing to assist you.

We recommend that you write your name on everything and label your boxes with your room number. Students and staff will help move your belongings into your dorm room. Labels help us better keep track of your belongings during the move-in process.

For starters, you should get ready to bring:

  • Twin extra-long sheets and mattress cover
  • Pillows and blankets
  • Lamp and lightbulbs
  • Storage tubs or stackable crates
  • Room décor
  • Utensils
  • Fillable water bottle
  • Shower caddy
  • Medication
  • Laundry detergent
  • Laundry basket
  • Computer/laptop
  • Office supplies

See our college packing list for more detailed information on what to bring.

What to Leave at Home

For planning purposes, please know Jewell prohibits the following items in student rooms: hot plates, toasters (all kinds), coffee makers with heating elements and anything with an exposed heating element.

Note: these items can be stored and used in the common area kitchenettes, located in each building, for student use. Not sure if you can bring something? Just e-mail the Residence Life Staff, and we will let you know.
