The Pre-Medical Advisory Program prepares students for admission to professional schools in medicine and related health professions while helping them become thoughtful, scientifically prepared and compassionate future healthcare professionals.

Pre-Medicine Program at William Jewell

Pre-Medicine is an advising and preparation pathway rather than a major. Students from any academic major may participate while completing the science and other prerequisites required by their intended professional schools.

Goals for Student Learning

Students participating in Pre-Medicine will:

  • Build a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
  • Develop scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Evaluate scientific evidence and research.
  • Develop strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Explore ethical and social issues in healthcare.
  • Develop professional maturity and interpersonal skills.
  • Prepare academically and personally for professional-school admission.

Experiences & Internships

Future physicians need experience beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to pursue clinical exposure, research, service, shadowing and other healthcare experiences.

The Pre-Medical Advisory Program can help students identify meaningful opportunities and understand how those experiences contribute to professional development and the application process.

Your Path at Jewell

Students may major in any discipline. Many students choose majors in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, exercise science, health sciences or psychology, but students from across the College can successfully pursue healthcare careers.

Students are encouraged to begin pre-professional advising during their first semester and to take BMS 111: Preparing for the Medical Professions early in their Jewell experience.
